What is "Grounding" yourself
during an anxiety attack?
"GROUNDING" is the act of settling or calming one's body and mind by staying focused via physical or mental exercise.
Although grounding is not a permanent solution for anxiety, it is something to help you cope through those difficult situations.
The first exercise is called the 5 senses technique used to identify sights, smells, sounds, taste, and touch.
First, find five things that you can see and say them out loud.
Next find four things that you can feel.
Three things that you can hear and say it out loud.
Find two things that you can smell and lastly find one thing that you can taste.
Hopefully, by the time you've completed all of the steps, the feelings of anxiety have passed on.
If you find yourself having trouble with this exercise, try starting it over again. Remember, practice makes perfect and you may not get it on your first try. What's important to remember is that you continue to try using it as a method to help reduce or cope with anxiety/ panic attacks. Remember, millions of people suffer with this everyday and you are not alone.
